The Tradition 2277 is SINGER’s answer for home sewers who want a sewing machine that isn’t fussy or complicated yet still offers some more advanced features. With a complete 97 stitch applications, time-saving automatic features, and a heavy-duty metal frame, 2277 will meet nearly any need in regular home use.

The 2277 is unavailable at this time, but you still may find it on some internet sites or at private sales.

To get the best and most current information, I spoke with home sewers, pros, and teachers to thoroughly review this sewing machine.

Our Rating = 4.2/ 5

For home sewing, the SINGER Tradition 2277 earns a solid 4.2 out of a possible 5.0.

Who is this machine for?

The SINGER 2277 is designed for home sewers with solid fundamental skills and little room for a bigger machine.

The SINGER 2277 reviewed: features and flaws

Here are the features I considered when rating this sewing machine.

What to love:

  • The machine comes with 23 built-in stitches, including a fully automatic 1-step buttonhole and 97 stitch applications. Here’s the full list.
  • Easy to use free-arm
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Twin needle function
  • Adjustable presser foot pressure
  • Extra-high presser foot lifter
  • Front-loading bobbin
  • Adjustable stitch length and zigzag width
  • Three presser feet: All-Purpose, Buttonhole, Button Sewing
  • Product dimensions: 15 x 6.25 x 12 inches
  • Product weight: 13.6 pounds
  • Limited 25-year warranty, including 2-year on electronic components and 90-days on labor

But watch out for:

  • New sewers have had problems with bobbin and needle threading and had issues with tension. These problems were solved with a more careful reading of instructions.
  • The Tradition 2277 is no longer in production.

What others are saying

From the manufacturer:

“Whether you’re a beginner or more experienced sewist, this model has key basic for sewing all sorts of projects.” SINGER

What the pros say:

“Offers basic and decorative stitches, along with stretch stitches, so you can sew a wide range of fabrics.” JOANN

“Being a general full-size sewing machine, it is compatible with a wide range of fabrics both in weight and thickness, from silk to denim.” Seworbit.com

“Some particularly unlucky testers had a few jamming problems, while others grew frustrated with the machine’s tendency to un-thread. Many also warned that it’s ill-suited to thicker fabrics.” Sewingfromhome.com

Alternatives to the SINGER Tradition 2277

There is a lot of competition in the beginner’s sewing category. While SINGER’s Tradition 2277 is a fine choice, here are three other sewing machines that offer much the same utility.

Brother XM2701 Sewing Machine

27 built-in stitches including decorative, blind hem, zigzag, and stretch stitches, and an auto-size buttonhole

In a nutshell

If you’re looking for a sewing machine to do household sewing chores, the SINGER Tradition 2277 is a fine choice. While it may take some time to learn how to handle issues with threading and tension, it’s worth the effort. The Tradition 2277 can be a valuable and permanent part of your garment care artillery.
